New to the MX-5?
The short version of everything owners ask us before they buy.
Ask a questionND2 vs ND3 — which generation?
ND2 (2018–2023) brought the revised engines and a big jump in refinement. ND3 (2024 →) is the latest facelift: new LED lighting signature, a larger 8.8" centre display, a sharper steering rack and an asymmetric limited-slip diff on selected manuals. ND2 is the value pick; ND3 is the newest and best-equipped.
Soft top or RF hardtop?
The soft top is lighter, simpler and fully open — the purist's choice, and it drops in seconds by hand. The RF (Retractable Fastback) has a powered folding roof with a targa-style open feel, a quieter cabin on the highway and a coupe silhouette with the roof up.
1.5L or 2.0L engine?
The 1.5 is high-revving, light on its feet and frugal — many enthusiasts' favourite. The 2.0 has noticeably more torque for overtaking and relaxed cruising, and is standard on most RF models in Malaysia.
Trims explained: S, S Special, S Leather, RS, VS, 990S, NR-A
S — the lightest, simplest base car. S Special Package — adds the comfort and infotainment most buyers want. S Leather — heated leather seats and premium audio. RS — Bilstein dampers, strut brace, sportier setup. VS — RF luxury trim with leather. 990S — sub-1,000 kg special with lightweight forged wheels and uprated brakes. NR-A — the club-race base car with adjustable suspension.
What do auction grades mean?
The number is the overall condition: 6 / S nearly new, 5 excellent, 4.5 very good, 4 good with minor marks, 3.5 average. The letter is the interior: A best through E. R / RA means a repair history. We send you the full sheet — translated — for every car.
